Rome, Florence, Milan, Venice - coverage in Italy's major cities is excellent. TIM (Telecom Italia Mobile) and Vodafone Italy both have strong 4G networks with 5G now deployed in city centres. You'll have no issues navigating Rome's historic streets, checking train times, or video-calling home from a café overlooking the Arno.
The picture gets more mixed as you head south or into mountainous areas. Worth knowing before you go.
Coverage by region
Rome: Comprehensive coverage everywhere. The Metro A and B lines have improved underground signal significantly. The historic centre (Trastevere, Campo de' Fiori, around the Colosseum) is saturated with signal.
Florence and Tuscany: City coverage is excellent. The Chianti wine region, Val d'Orcia, and Siena - good along main roads, occasional gaps in very rural areas. Cinque Terre is well-covered in the villages themselves; hiking between them on the Sentiero Azzurro has some patchy sections.
Venice: Works fine in the main islands. The vaporetto routes across the lagoon have signal throughout.
Amalfi Coast: The main Amalfi Drive (SS163) and towns like Positano, Ravello, and Amalfi itself have decent coverage. It can be patchy in the hills above the coast road.
Sicily and Sardinia: Main cities (Palermo, Catania, Cagliari) are fine. Rural interior areas of both islands can have coverage gaps. Sardinia's inland areas are particularly sparse.
The Dolomites: Major ski resorts and valleys have good coverage. High altitude hiking trails and remote rifugi can drop to 2G or nothing. Always download offline maps for mountain hiking.
How much data for Italy?
Italy is walkable and the public transit in cities is straightforward once you understand it. A week in Rome and Florence uses maybe 2-3GB for typical tourist activities. Add a coastal trip or island travel and go to 5GB. Two weeks covering multiple cities comfortably: 7-10GB.
Trenitalia's app is the best way to manage train bookings - download it before you arrive. It needs an internet connection to check live departure info, but the booking itself works offline once confirmed.
See /esim-in-italy for current eSIM plan pricing. Italy is also covered by most Europe regional plans, which is worth considering if Italy is part of a broader European trip.
