Istanbul is one of those cities where you'll use Maps almost constantly. The street layout in historic neighbourhoods like Sultanahmet, Beyoglu, and the Grand Bazaar area is genuinely confusing, and the mix of trams, metro, ferries, and buses requires live transit checking to navigate efficiently. Good mobile data isn't a luxury here - it's close to essential.
Coverage in Turkey
Turkcell has the best network in Turkey, with strong 4G coverage in all major cities and tourist areas. Vodafone Turkey is solid in urban areas. Rural coverage is decent along the main tourism corridors (Aegean coast, Mediterranean coast, Cappadocia) but drops off in eastern Turkey and mountainous interior regions.
Istanbul: excellent everywhere. The Bosphorus ferry routes have signal throughout. The historic peninsula, Beyoglu, and both Asian and European sides are all well-covered.
Cappadocia: better than you might expect given its relative remoteness. Göreme, Uçhisar, and the balloon launch areas all have solid 4G. Hot air balloon rides obviously mean no navigation needed, but Instagram will thank you for the connection.
Aegean and Mediterranean coasts (Bodrum, Fethiye, Antalya): excellent. The resort areas are heavily covered. Boat trips and some mountain areas will have gaps.
eSIM in Turkey
Turkey requires SIM registration with passport details for locally-purchased SIMs. International eSIM plans sidestep this requirement for tourists, which is one practical advantage. However, Turkey has previously restricted access to some websites and social media platforms - VPN usage on eSIM data follows the same rules as any internet connection in Turkey.
How much data?
For a week in Istanbul plus coastal areas: 5GB is comfortable. Two weeks including multiple cities: 8-10GB. The city's ferry and transport apps need consistent data access.
Get the İstanbul Seyahat app for transit directions in Istanbul - it's more accurate than Google Maps for the ferry and bus network. Check /esim-in-turkey for plan details.
