
The United States is big. Obvious statement, but it matters for mobile coverage in a way that doesn't apply to most European countries. What works in New York or Los Angeles might genuinely fail in rural Wyoming or the stretch of I-90 between South Dakota and Montana.
For city travel - New York, LA, Chicago, Miami, San Francisco, Seattle - you'll have no coverage issues whatsoever. Dense urban 5G everywhere. The complexity starts when you leave the cities.
Which networks matter
T-Mobile has the best nationwide coverage in 2026. Their 600MHz low-band 5G reaches into rural areas where AT&T and Verizon have gaps. If you're road tripping or visiting rural national parks, T-Mobile-backed plans are the better choice.
AT&T is excellent in cities and suburbs, slightly patchier in very rural areas. Good enough for most trips that stay on major highways and in towns.
Verizon is still strong in the Northeast and major metros. Less relevant for international eSIM plans, which typically use T-Mobile or AT&T infrastructure.

What to expect in national parks

Yellowstone: Old Faithful, Canyon Village, and Mammoth have intermittent signal. Most of the park roads between these points have no coverage. The Lamar Valley for wildlife viewing is a dead zone.
Zion: Springdale (the gateway town) has good signal. Zion Canyon has patchy coverage that drops completely on trails like Angels Landing and The Narrows.
Joshua Tree: Surprisingly decent T-Mobile coverage along the main park road. Some hiking areas lose signal, but you can usually get a bar or two at most trailheads.
Glacier National Park: Very limited. Some signal at the lodges. Going-to-the-Sun Road is mostly a dead zone. Download everything before entering the park.
How much data for a US trip
American roads were not designed for public transit. You'll use Google Maps a lot - driving navigation burns more data than walking navigation, because map tiles for larger areas load more frequently. A road trip will eat through data faster than a city trip.
For a week in one city: 5GB is plenty. For a two-week road trip covering multiple states: 10-15GB is sensible, especially if you're using streaming music in the car (Spotify at standard quality is about 45MB per hour, which adds up on a 10-hour driving day).
City-specific tips
New York: Subway signal has improved massively. Most Manhattan stations now have cellular service. Signal on the actual trains between stations is still hit-or-miss, but you'll have connectivity at every stop. Download the NYC Subway map offline just in case.
Las Vegas: The Strip has excellent coverage. Casinos pump signal inside with DAS (distributed antenna systems) so you won't lose connection indoors. Good for calling rides and checking maps.
San Francisco: Coverage is solid across the city. BART (the metro) has cell service in stations but not in the transbay tube between SF and Oakland. The Golden Gate Bridge has signal on the walkway.
Interstate driving and dead zones
Most major interstates have continuous coverage, but there are notable exceptions. I-70 through central Utah has long stretches with zero signal. I-80 across Nevada between Reno and Salt Lake City has significant gaps. I-90 through Montana and I-10 across west Texas both have dead zones that can last 30-60 minutes of driving.
Download offline maps for your entire route before a road trip. Google Maps lets you select custom regions - draw a box around your driving corridor and download it all. Spotify and Apple Music both let you download playlists for offline listening. Do both on hotel Wi-Fi each evening for the next day's drive.
US-specific tips
Google Fi works brilliantly in the US but requires a US address to sign up - not ideal for most international visitors. Stick to an international eSIM provider.
The US uses 911 for emergencies, and emergency calls work regardless of your eSIM plan or carrier status. You don't need any active plan to call 911.
Major cities have very good 5G now. Midtown Manhattan, downtown Chicago, and the LA metro area all have consistent sub-6GHz 5G. For most practical purposes, you won't notice the difference between 4G and 5G for Maps or messaging - but video streaming and large downloads are noticeably faster.
